What to Expect on Your Breast Augmentation Journey

Congratulations, you’ve chosen to go ahead with a breast enlargement procedure. It’s no exaggeration to say that for some women, the results can be life-changing. Breast enlargement can help you embrace your body and reclaim your confidence. However, while the results are transformative, we know that surgery of every kind can seem daunting. That’s why we want to help you prepare for your journey and let you know what you can expect every step of the way.

What happens before breast enlargement surgery?

A great starting point is to read up on the breast enlargement procedure and note down any questions you want to ask during your consultation. Before and after photos, which you can find on our website and Instagram, will help you get a better idea of the type of breasts you want. You can also show them to your surgeon during the consultation.

You’ll also need help from a friend or family member after the procedure, so now is a good time to reach out and see who’s available. You can also bring someone along to the consultation for support.

Breast surgery consultation

The next step is to meet your surgeon and patient care coordinator at your first breast augmentation consultation. They will provide you with information about the breast enlargement procedure, discuss your medical history and answer any questions or concerns you have.

Your surgeon will also ask you about the result you want to achieve. This is a good opportunity to show the surgeon photos. The surgeon will make several measurements of your anatomy and discuss the perfect size, shape and type of implant to achieve the desired result. They’ll then let you ‘try on’ different sized implants so you can get an idea of how they’ll look and feel.

The goal is that you’ll be able to leave the consultation having decided on the size, type and shape of implant you want. You’ll also understand exactly what the procedure involves as well as the risks.

Pre-operation appointment

Next is your pre-operation appointment, which usually takes place over the phone. We’ll take this opportunity to explain what will happen on the day and take your pre-operation photos.

We’ll also give you all the information you’ll need, such as the date of your surgery and what to bring with you. If it’s in person, you will undergo a blood test and MRSA swab test to make sure you’re fit, healthy and ready for surgery. You will receive an admission email or call 72 – 40 hours before your surgery to confirm the time you should arrive at the hospital. You’ll also be reminded to bring a post op bra with you so you can be fitted with this when you wake up from your surgery.

What happens on the day of your breast enlargement surgery?

On the big day, you should arrive at the time stated in the admission email or call. The breast enlargement procedure is an outpatient treatment, so you’ll need to have a friend or family member with you to drive you home.

Here’s a timeline of what you can expect on the day of your surgery:

  • 11am – You’ll arrive and be greeted by our team. A nurse will take you for your medical checks, including a pregnancy and blood pressure test. They’ll also check your medical history and talk to your helper about how they can care for you after the surgery.
  • 12pm – Your surgeon will draw surgical markings and prepare you for surgery. You’ll also meet the anaesthetist, who will ask you questions about your general health and your previous experiences with anaesthesia.
  • 1pm – You’ll be shown to your room and asked to change into a gown to prepare for surgery. This is a good chance to calm your nerves before the operation begins.
  • 2pm – You’ll go through to the operating room and receive an IV that will deliver the anaesthetic. The breast enlargement procedure will take around an hour.
  • 3.30pm – You’ll wake up around an hour and a half later. You’ll be taken to the ward to recover and your surgeon will come to see you and give you a sneak peek of your new breasts.
  • 6pm – You’ll be discharged and your helper will be there to drive you home.

Aftercare

You will have been given full instructions about what you can and can’t do immediately after your surgery. You can expect to feel some pain and discomfort in the days following the surgery, which you can manage with pain medication. After around a week, the pain will get significantly better.

Here’s everything you need to know about our aftercare service and what you can expect from your breast augmentation recovery

Post-op check-up

Around a week after your breast enlargement surgery, we’ll schedule your first follow-up appointment. One of our nurses will check your dressings and make sure the incisions are healing nicely. They’ll also check your breasts. Although you’ll still be swollen, you will get a much clearer picture of the results of the procedure. You’ll have the same check up at the two week point to make sure everything is healing nicely. We may suggest another follow-up if more healing time is required.

Three months after surgery

After 3-6 months, you will need to contact us to schedule your final appointment with our team. We will check on your progress and take a photo of your new breasts. If everything is going as it should be, this will mark the end of your breast augmentation journey.
