Tummy Tuck  Surgery

Abdominoplasty or a tummy tuck is the process in which unwanted, loose skin and tissue is removed from the stomach area to create a flatter, firmer, and more sculpted appearance. It is common to be left with excess sagging skin following rapid weight loss due to a lack of elasticity in the area. A very lucky number of people have skin that snaps to how it was prior to weight gain and loss, but the vast majority can be left behind with undesirable skin not only on the tummy but on the neck, arms, thighs, and a number of other areas on the body.

There are a number of reasons that cause people to develop a weak abdomen and excessive loose skin in the tummy area including: extreme weight loss, pregnancy, puberty or ageing.

The tummy tuck procedure, commonly referred to as muffin top surgery, is carried out under general anaesthetic and takes between 1 and 3 hours to complete, often requiring an overnight stay in hospital. Your surgeon will begin by making an incision across your lower abdomen from hip to hip in order to gain access to the muscles and tissue in the area. This opening will be used to remove any unwanted fat and to tighten the muscles underneath.

Many patients opt to have liposuction at the same time to enhance results and further sculpt the body into the desired shape. Your surgeon will finish off by stretching the skin across the stomach to create a tight finish before stitching it in place and removing any excess. In more extreme cases, surgeons are required to make a second incision around the belly button in order to reposition it.

During the free consultation, your surgeon may recommend a mini tummy tuck as opposed to a full tummy tuck if you have a smaller amount of sagging skin in the area. However, both of these procedures are designed to give you a more sculpted figure which will allow clothes to look more flattering while boosting your self-esteem.

  • What is the recovery process?

You will experience some bruising, swelling and soreness in the weeks following your procedure.  It is recommended that you plan up to 2 weeks off work to enable your body to recover.  You will need to wear a support garment for approximately 6 weeks following surgery and you should avoid any strenuous activity during this time.

  • Will I be left with scars?

You will have a scar running across your lower abdomen but over time this will fade and can be covered by most underwear or swimwear.

  • Can this surgery help me lose weight?

Ideally, you should be at your ideal weight at the time of your tummy tuck surgery. The aim of the surgery is to remove loose skin but if you lose weight following the procedure, you risk being left with sagging skin once again and may need another tummy tuck.

  • How long will my results last?

Results should last for a number of years if you continue to stay at a healthy weight. As you get older, you may experience some natural sagging as your skin becomes less elastic with age.

  • Should I have children before or after a tummy tuck?

It is recommended that you have children prior to undergoing a tummy tuck due to the dramatic changes we experience during pregnancy.
