WHAT IS BREAST ASYMMETRY?

Asymmetrical breasts are breasts that are uneven or unequal in size, shape, position and volume. There’s a variety of reasons why breasts may appear uneven, this can be as a result of changes during puberty, hormonal changes, nipple position, physical changes during and after pregnancy, trauma or genetics. Whilst completely normal (it’s reported that around 50% of women feel that their > breasts are slightly, or significantly uneven), for a small percentage of women, the uneven appearance can cause psychological distress and issues with self-confidence. Therefore, surgery to correct uneven breasts is a popular choice.

THE THREE TYPES OF BREAST ASYMMETRY

Breast asymmetry (uneven breasts) can be classified into three types:

  • 1. Anisomastia

This refers to a difference in breast volume.

  • 2. Anisothelia

This describes a difference in the positioning of the nipples and areola.

  • 3. Combined Asymmetry

This is a combination of both anisomastia and anisothelia.

WHAT CAUSES BREAST ASYMMETRY (UNEVEN BREASTS)?

There are many different factors that contribute to the initial development of the breasts, and there will be changes over time as a woman goes through the different stages of life. Genetics play a part in how a woman’s breasts will form, but puberty, pregnancy, hormonal changes and underlying medical conditions will also influence growth and changes. It’s quite common for breasts to develop at slightly different rates, therefore becoming uneven as a result of:

  • Puberty
  • Hormonal changes

Hormonal changes are more often to blame for breast changes. It may be that, following development, one breast may have more breast cells, or the cells happen to be more sensitive to the effects of oestrogen. Therefore, changes due to ovulation, pregnancy, menopause, and the like, will highlight differences in the breasts and the imbalance will be more obvious.

Providing there are no other underlying medical conditions to consider then Enhance Medical will be able to present you with the various options available to correct the discrepancies.

Other causes of breast asymmetry include:

  • Physical trauma
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Breast cancer

HOW CAN YOU FIX BREAST ASYMMETRY? BREAST ASYMMETRY CORRECTION

There are differing levels of breast asymmetry, and if you are dealing with a very minor difference there may be things you can do to naturally even out the breasts. Exercising the pectoral muscles, breast massage and hot and cold-water therapy can all contribute to helping to achieve a more balanced appearance. However, if the difference between the breasts is more noticeable then you might want to consider a more permanent solution, such as breast surgery.

If this is the position you find yourself in, and you feel that the uneven appearance of your breasts is having a negative impact on your self-esteem, then it might be time to pay Enhance Medical a visit. The first stage will be an initial consultation with one of our specialist cosmetic surgeons. This meeting will determine the scale of the problem and identify the best course of treatment to correct the unevenness. Breast asymmetry can be treated with different types of breast surgery:

  • Breast uplift – your surgeon may recommend a breast lift, this is most appropriate when the nipple position needs adjusting to improve evenness and achieve balance.
  • Breast reduction – a unilateral breast reduction reduces the size of the larger breast and may be best suited to you.
  • Breast enlargement – your surgeon may recommend making the breasts more even by enlarging the smaller breast with a unilateral breast enlargement. Alternatively, you may have a bilateral enlargement, but different sized implants may be used with each breast.

What’s important to remember is that surgery to correct breast asymmetry is down to individual requirements and circumstances – the type of surgery one person has will vary to another’s. It’s not a simple case of enlarging, reducing or lifting one breast to match another, in most cases breast asymmetry surgery will involve a combination of suitable breast augmentation techniques to achieve an even and balanced appearance. Therefore, it’s important to also note that recovery time and surgery cost will vary case by case also.

As there are many variations of these procedures, your consultant will advise you all the way, Enhance Medical are used to helping women to solve these issues. A simple consultation is all it takes to discuss your options with one of their specialists. There are a few different ways to approach the issue and your recommendation will be tailored specifically to your condition, lifestyle and aesthetic aspirations. It might be that you need breast implants of different sizes. Maybe one breast needs lifting but the other doesn’t, and tissue can also be removed from one area either as a simple stand-alone procedure, or part of a lift or implant placement.

By undergoing this type of surgery, you can find that past psychological distress and low self-esteem are drastically reduced. Although this may seem a minor cosmetic flaw to some, there are a growing number of women who no longer feel the need to accept areas of their body that they are unhappy with. A relatively simple and cost-effective procedure can change far more than your outward appearance.

HOW IS BREAST ASYMMETRY SURGERY PERFORMED?

Breast asymmetry surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and takes between 1-2 hours to perform. How breast asymmetry surgery is performed and what it involves depends on the type of corrective breast surgery you have.

If a unilateral breast enlargement is best suited, this will involve enlarging one breast to match the size of the other – creating a more even appearance. This is done by inserting a breast implant behind the breast tissue or under the chest muscle.

If correcting uneven breasts with a breast reduction, this will involve your surgeon reducing the size of the larger breast by removing breast tissue or fat from it.
With a breast lift, evenness is gained by lifting one or both breasts so that they are balanced in their shape and position. This is done by lifting the underlying breast tissue.

As mentioned earlier, the type of breast asymmetry surgery varies person to person based on their individual circumstances and will therefore be performed slightly differently, most likely using a variety of surgical techniques based on an person’s requirements.

HOW MUCH DOES BREAST ASYMMETRY SURGERY COST?

The cost of breast asymmetry correction surgery will also vary depending on the type of surgery you have. For example, you may require breast implants and /or unilateral or bilateral enlargement/reduction and/or lift. A breast reduction (mammaplasty) starts at £7,995; a breast enlargement starts at £4,250, and a breast lift (mastopexy) starts at £5,950 – therefore, the cost of your breast asymmetry surgery will vary depending on the type of surgery you and your surgeon decide is most appropriate for your individual needs. For more information regarding breast surgery costs, take a look at our breast surgery pricing page.

As your initial consultation is free, the cost of your surgery covers:

  • Pre-Operative Assessment

RECOVERING FROM BREAST ASYMMETRY SURGERY

Like any breast surgery, the recovery timeline for breast asymmetry surgery varies from person to person depending on individual circumstances and the type of breast augmentation you have had. Typically, it takes six weeks to fully recover from breast asymmetry surgery. By this time, swelling should have subsided any you should not be experiencing any discomfort.

Following the day of your surgery, you will need to take one-two weeks off work and avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting.
Swelling and discomfort are normal following surgery, and this can be managed with pain medication. With regular post-operative appointments, your surgeon and our dedicated aftercare team will advise on the type of medication you can take, the type of support bra you should wear and provide any other information that can aid your recovery.

  • ARE ASYMMETRICAL BREASTS NORMAL?

As a general rule there is nothing uncommon about asymmetrical breasts. However, it’s easy to understand why many women choose to undergo a corrective procedure. The shape and overall appearance of your breasts can be changed, as can your sensitive body image.

  • Can breast asymmetry be avoided?

Unfortunately, no. Breast asymmetry develops during puberty. In some cases, it can be avoided but only when it is developed because of a growth disorder. Asymmetry surgery is the most effective way to improve your appearance.

  • Are there any other treatments for asymmetrical breasts?

The only treatment for asymmetrical breasts is through surgical correction. This can be done through reduction or implants.

  • What are the symptoms of asymmetrical breasts?

Asymmetrical breasts can be recognised through aesthetic appearance. If one breast is significantly different to the other there is a high possibility you may have asymmetrical breasts. A free consultation will determine whether correction is the best option for you.
