Commonly referred to as ‘lipo’, Liposuction is a type of cosmetic surgery that helps to sculpt the body. Popular with both men and women, liposuction involves the removal of unwanted and excess body fat and loose skin in areas where it is difficult to lose through exercising and dieting alone. This type of surgery is also popular amongst those who have lost weight and have excess loose skin as a result.

The cost of liposuction surgery starts at £2,995. The cost of liposuction can vary based on the number of different areas you choose to have fat removal:

As your initial consultation is free, this cost covers:
- Pre-operative assessment
- Liposuction surgery and surgical care team
- Post-operative aftercare for 12 months

WHAT DOES LIPOSUCTION SURGERY INVOLVE?
Liposuction involves the suction of unwanted fat from targeted areas, such as the stomach or hips, through a thin tube known as a cannula. Depending on the type of treatment you have, liposuction can be performed under either general or local anaesthetic, or light sedation:
- During liposuction surgery, a small incision is made near the treatment area to insert the cannula.
- A surgeon will then use the tube to infiltrate a solution into the fat cells, breaking them down and allowing them to be removed using the suction cannula.
- The maximum amount of fat that can be removed safely is about 3-4 litres. Removing more than this in a single day increases the risk of complication. If a patient requires more fat to be removed, surgical procedures will be split.
- The area of incision is then stitched and bandaged at the end of the procedure.
This technique is often used in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures such as a breast reduction and tummy tucks.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF LIPOSUCTION?
As with any form of cosmetic surgery, there are risks associated with liposuction. These include infection, scarring, numbness in the treated area/s and unevenness.

AFTERCARE & RECOVERING FROM LIPOSUCTION SURGERY
Recovery from liposuction surgery depends on the type of procedure you have. Full recovery from liposuction typically takes 6 weeks, at which point it’s safe for you to resume normal activities and begin exercising again, whilst avoiding anything too strenuous.
Immediately following surgery and for the first 6 weeks, you’ll need to wear a compression garment, to reduce swelling, support healing and maintain your new shape. You’ll need to wear a post-surgery compression garment for three-weeks following your procedure.
You’ll begin to see clear results of liposuction at around six-months, after swelling reduces.
It’s important to note that recovery can vary depending on your general health, the type of liposuction you have, and the surgical technique. Always follow your surgeon’s specific post-operative instructions for optimal recovery.

Is liposuction right for me?

Will I have any scarring?
A mark from the incision will be left at the site of the incision for the tube entry but this will have a length of less than half an inch and will be as discretely placed as possible. Like other incisions, it will fade with time and should become virtually unnoticeable.

How much fat can be removed with liposuction?
That maximum amount of fat that can be removed in a single liposuction procedure is 3-4 litres – any more than this in a single session can result in serious complication. The amount of fat removed depends on the treatment areas as well as the quantity of fat there in the first place. Your surgeon can give you a better idea of this during your consultation, but they will remove enough to get noticeable results whilst remaining safe. It is essential to remember that liposuction surgery is not a weight loss tool but a procedure to help remove stubborn fat.

How long is the recovery process?
Liposuction recovery is relatively quick but varies depending on how many areas are treated. You will be advised as to whether or not you need to wear a support garment and how long for. Pain relief medicine will be recommended where needed and you should avoid exerting yourself for a few weeks but you should feel back to normal after a week or two.
