What is a Facelift?

A facelift, also know as a rhytidectomy, is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures for both men and women in the UK. The aim of a facelift is to restore a more youthful facial appearance for those who feel their skin has become looser and saggy, by creating a smoothed, more defined appearance.

A facelift is suitable for anyone who believes they’ve lost elasticity in the skin and muscles, lost definition particularly in the neck and chin, have deep-seated wrinkles/older appearance, or have excess facial skin following weight loss.

What’s the Difference Between a Facelift and a Mini-Facelift?

Whilst a traditional facelift involves making incisions along the hairline and around the ears to lift and tighten the skin and underlying tissues, a mini facelift is less invasive, targeting only the lower face and neck with smaller incisions; ideal for those with early signs of aging.

What Happens During a Facelift?

Several different methods can be used to perform facelifts, all of which will be discussed with you during your consultation. Your surgeon will advise you on which technique is the most suitable for you and will provide you with the best possible outcome based on your desired results.

Traditional: This method involves the surgeon making an incision from ear to ear along the hair line. The skin is separated from the tissues below to have access to tighten the muscles and remove excess fat from underneath. Finally, the skin is stretched across the area, any excess is removed, and it is stitched in place along the original opening.

Minimal-Access Cranial Suspension: The MACS technique involves several smaller incisions as opposed to one large opening. The muscles are tightened, and any fat is removed through these small incisions which are stitched up at the end of the procedure. This style of facelift can also involve a tiny camera which is inserted in one of the incisions and displays an image in the operating room so the surgeon can see which muscles to tighten under the skin.

Recovering from a Facelift

Recovering from a facelift, like any cosmetic procedure, varies from person to person. You can usually expect a fully recovery in 6 months, when all swelling will have reduced and final results will be visible.

Immediate Post-Op: Patients may experience swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort, which are managed with prescribed medications. Following the surgery, your face may feel tight, swollen, and bruised so it is important to wear supporting garments and sleep upright in bed.

First Week: Most swelling and bruising subside within the first week, and stitches are typically removed around this time. After a week you may start to slightly increase your activity and you may be able to return to work after 2 weeks. You must continue to wear the support at night until week 4.

4-6 Weeks: By this time, most bruising will have faded. Patients should still avoid strenuous exercise and direct sun exposure.

Full Recovery: It can take several months for all swelling to disappear and for the full results of the facelift to be visible. The final result can typically be judged after around 6 months.

  • How long does a facelift last?

The results achieved by a facelift will usually last for around 10 years, but it is important to remember that it will not stop the ageing process, and gradually wrinkles and lines will return. However, your skin will remain smoother and more youthful looking than before the surgery.

  • What is the best age to get a facelift?

We advise patients to wait until they are at least 40 years old to get the best results from this type of surgery.

There isn’t a rule when it comes to the age you have to be to get a facelift, however most patients are between the age of 40-70 years old. Candidacy is dependent on a few factors, including extreme aging and your current state of health. During your consultation, your surgeon will help you determine whether a facelift is a viable option for you or whether you’d be better served by a different procedure.

  • What is the recovery period and required aftercare?

Following the surgery, your face may feel tight, swollen, and bruised so it is important to wear supporting garments and sleep upright in bed. After a week you may start to slightly increase your activity and you may be able to return to work after 2 weeks. You must continue to wear the support at night until week 4 and by this time, most of the bruising will have faded. The final result can be judged after around 6 months.

  • Will a facelift make me look younger?

The purpose of this type of procedure is to tighten the muscles and smooth the skin so that lines and wrinkles are reduced.  In doing so, the face appears rejuvenated, creating an overall younger looking complexion.

  • Will there be any visible scarring?

Whilst scarring is to be expected with all cosmetic surgery, scars from facelift procedures are normally barely visible, and should fade within 12 months.

  • Is a facelift painful?

Most facelifts are performed under general anaesthetic, with less invasive facelift procedures performed under local anaesthetic, so no pain will be felt. While everyone’s pain tolerance is different, most patients describe the pain during the recovery process as mild to moderate discomfort; your prescribed pain-relief medication, and your surgeon will advise you on your specific recovery expectations.

  • What are the risks associated with facelifts?

As with any surgery, there are associated risks. The most common risks with this type of procedure are hair loss, skin becoming pale or dark in some areas, and nerve damage. By choosing one of our fully qualified and experienced surgeons, you will significantly reduce your chance of encountering one of these problems.
