The Different Types of Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

If you’ve started researching tummy tuck surgery, you’ve probably come quite a few different terms. Names like ‘mini tummy tuck’, ‘full tummy tuck’, or especially ‘fleur-de-lis’ can all feel quite overwhelming when you’re just beginning to consider surgery. It might feel unclear as to what the differences are, or which procedure may be right for you.

The reality is that there isn’t a single “standard” tummy tuck. The right approach depends on your body, your goals, and your stage of life. Those things are all unique to you and so too should the approach be that your surgeon takes. This guide will walk you through the different types of tummy tuck and help you understand how they relate to your own situation, so you can feel more prepared.

What Is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to improve the shape and tone of the abdomen. It typically involves removing excess skin, tightening weakened or separated abdominal muscles, and in some cases, addressing stubborn fat.

People consider a tummy tuck for a number of reasons. For many, it follows pregnancy, where stretched skin and muscle separation often can’t be improved through exercise and diet alone. Others may have experienced significant weight loss, leaving behind loose skin, while for some it’s part of natural ageing.

Whatever your circumstances, understanding what a tummy tuck actually involves is very important before proceeding with any form of surgery. If you’d like to understand the full process in more detail, including preparation and recovery, give our guide to tummy tuck surgery a read. Check out our Tummy Tuck page to find out more about the tummy tuck surgery and treatment options offered by Enhance and begin exploring which may be right for you.

The Different Types of Tummy Tuck

The main differences between types of tummy tuck procedure are how much of the abdominal area is treated, how much skin needs to be removed, and whether muscle repair is required. Below are the most common types of tummy tuck and what they typically involve. To find out more about any of these, book a free consultation with one of our expert body contouring surgeons who will be happy to discuss which is most suitable for you.

Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck is the least invasive form of abdominoplasty and is usually suitable for those with a small amount of loose skin below the belly button. The incision is smaller, and the belly button typically doesn’t need to be repositioned. Recovery from a mini tummy tuck is also usually quicker than more extensive body contouring procedures.

However, it’s important to understand the limitations of a mini tummy tuck. For example, it won’t address concerns above the belly button or significant muscle separation. The procedure is designed to address minor skin laxity (loss of firmness and elasticity) and fat deposits below the belly button. This means that those with skin overhang or who are seeking an improvement to their waistline or muscular structure should consider other forms of body contouring surgery. It’s also important to be close to your target body weight as this procedure is not designed for weight loss or significant reshaping.

Mini Tummy Tuck at a Glance

Best suited for: Mild, localised changes below the belly button
Area treated: Lower abdomen only
What it addresses: Limited excess skin without significant structural change
Recovery: Typically around 2–4 weeks for initial recovery
Considerations: Does not treat the upper abdomen or correct muscle separation

Full (Standard) Tummy Tuck

A full tummy tuck is the most commonly performed type and addresses the entire abdominal area. The procedure removes excess skin, tightens the abdominal muscles, and repositions the belly button to maintain a natural appearance. For many patients, this offers a noticeable transformation, particularly after pregnancy or weight changes.

Whilst a full tummy tuck offers significantly greater potential benefits over a mini, these are reflected in the recovery time and commitment required following the surgery. You’ll need to allow for a period where your mobility is reduced and you won’t be able to lift anything heavy for a few weeks. As the surgery is more invasive, it does carry a slightly higher risk of complications and of course scarring will be more significant, though our expert surgeons use the most modern techniques to minimise both of these.

This procedure isn’t suitable if you’re looking for a minimal intervention, but for a more dramatic transformation it can offer a more complete and balanced result. If you’re considering a full abdominoplasty, it’s worth understanding the cost of a tummy tuck and what influences pricing.

Full (Standard) Tummy Tuck at a Glance

Best suited for: Moderate to more noticeable abdominal changes
Area treated: Upper and lower abdomen
What it addresses: Excess skin and muscle separation across the abdominal wall
Recovery: Typically around 4–6 weeks for initial recovery
Considerations: More invasive than a mini procedure, with a longer recovery period

Extended Tummy Tuck

An extended tummy tuck builds on the full tummy tuck by also addressing the sides of the body, which you’ll often hear referred to as the flanks or “love handles”. The procedure is best suited to patients who’ve experienced more significant changes to their body that have caused excess skin beyond the front of the abdomen. This is especially common after a large amount of weight loss. If you’re having similar issues to this then an extended abdominoplasty may be the right solution for you.

If considering and extended tummy tuck, be mindful that treating areas beyond the central abdomen requires a longer incision which is likely to result in more swelling and a bigger scar. As a result, the recovery period can be more demanding, and you should expect a longer time before you can return to normal activity. However, if the benefits of a more complete body contour outweigh the additional recovery considerations, an extended tummy tuck can be one of the most transformative cosmetic procedures available.

Extended Tummy Tuck at a Glance

Best suited for: Wider abdominal changes extending into the flanks
Area treated: Abdomen and sides of the waist
What it addresses: Excess skin across the midsection, including areas beyond the front of the abdomen
Recovery: Typically around 4–6 weeks, depending on the extent of treatment
Considerations: Longer incision to achieve a more continuous contour

Fleur-de-Lis

A fleur-de-lis tummy tuck is an advanced form of abdominoplasty intended for cases where a patient has excess skin both horizontally and vertically. In addition to the standard horizontal incision, a vertical incision is made down the centre of the abdomen, allowing for more comprehensive reshaping. It’s most typically carried out when the patient has undergone massive weight loss, either naturally or through separate surgery, or after they’ve had multiple pregnancies. For the right person, and FDL abdominoplasty can achieve a complete transformation of the abdominal area and often results in a tighter, more contoured waistline than a standard tummy tuck.

While the Fleur de Lis procedure can deliver more significant contour improvements than other types of tummy tuck, it does leave significant scarring. The primary thing for you to consider is the presence of an additional vertical scar that is likely to remain visible even after you make a full recovery. The level of tissue adjustment involved in an FDL and the complexity of the procedure mean that recovery time is often longer and care requirements post-operation are greater.

If you have a large amount of excess skin and feel an FDL tummy tuck would be the right choice, it’s extremely important to choose an experienced surgeon who’ll work with you and your body. At Enhance Medical, several of our surgeons specialise in these procedures and would love to help you achieve your dream transformation. Reach out today to speak with our team.

Fleur-de-Lis at a Glance

Best suited for: Significant skin laxity, often following major weight loss
Area treated: Full abdomen with both vertical and horizontal correction
What it addresses: Excess skin in more than one direction
Recovery: Typically longer than standard procedures due to the complexity of the surgery
Considerations: More visible scarring as a result of the vertical incision

Which Type of Tummy Tuck Is Right for You?

Now that we’ve discussed the different types of tummy tuck and what they involve, we can get to the most important question: which one is right for you? The answer depends on a few things and is really unique to you as an individual, but there are some common life events which may help steer you towards the right option.

After Pregnancy

Pregnancy commonly leads to stretched skin and, in the later stages, separation of the abdominal muscles to prepare for birth. Whilst the human body is excellent at adapting, a woman is often left with permanent changes to the appearance of her abdomen that cannot be resolved through exercise and diet alone.

In many post-pregnancy cases, a full tummy tuck is the recommended course of action if cosmetic surgery is being considered. During the procedure, it’s possible to repair the separated rectus abdominis muscles and restore abdominal shape. It’s also common to combine a tummy tuck with other procedures, particularly breast surgery, as part of a wider transformation. You’ll often hear this referred to as a ‘mummy makeover’.

After Weight Loss

Gaining or carrying around a large amount of excess weight causes skin to stretch in order to accommodate the buildup of fat tissue. Following significant weight loss, it’s common to be left with excess skin that affects both comfort and appearance.

The most suitable type of tummy tuck really depends on the amount of excess skin and its location. If there is a lot of loose skin, or if it’s located on other areas than just the front of the abdomen, then procedures such as an extended or fleur-de-lis tummy tuck are often more suitable. These allow for more comprehensive reshaping of the entire area and may be a better solution to help you achieve your desired results.

Mild Changes or Early Consideration

If your concerns are more subtle, such as a small amount of loose skin below the belly button, a mini tummy tuck may be enough to achieve the result you’re looking for. It’s the perfect balance between addressing problem areas to improve your self esteem and managing recovery time, especially if you lead a busy or active life and can’t afford the downtime that a more extensive procedure might require.

Combining Procedures

As mentioned above, a tummy tuck is often combined with other treatments, such as liposuction and breast augmentation. These so called mummy makeovers are usually cost less than having each of the procedures individually and they can normally be carried out at the same time, under the same anaesthetic, to reduce recovery time.

You can also explore a detailed comparison of liposuction vs tummy tuck to understand which approach may be most suitable for you. Whichever most appeals, remember that neither is intended to be a weight loss solution. Whilst both surgeries may result in some form of weight loss, this is only from the excess skin and adipose tissue that is being removed. Before undergoing either, you should be at or very close to your target weight. After surgery, proper nutrition and exercise are vital to preserve the results.

Why the Right Approach Is Personalised

No two bodies are the same, which is why there’s no single “best” tummy tuck. The most appropriate approach depends on your anatomy, your goals, and your lifestyle. This is why a consultation is so important. It allows your surgeon to recommend the option that will deliver the most natural and balanced result for you.
