Face Lift Surgery

The purpose of a facelift is to create a youthful, smooth appearance and this type of surgery is particularly popular amongst those who are beginning to develop the inevitable wrinkles that come with ageing. The procedure, also known as rhytidectomy, is used to remove excess skin from the face and the surrounding areas which enables the face to appear softer and more defined. As we grow older, the elasticity of our skin starts to weaken, resulting in lines, wrinkles, and an overall tired look but facelifts help to eliminate these problems.

The most common problems that patients encounter which cause them to seek the help of facelift surgery include loss of elasticity in the skin and muscles, loss of definition particularly in the neck and chin, deep-seated wrinkles / older appearance or excess skin following weight loss.

Rhytidectomy Surgery

There are a number of different methods used to perform facelifts and these will be discussed with you during your consultation. Your surgeon will advise you on which technique is the most suitable for you and will provide you with the best possible outcome.

Traditional: This method involves the surgeon making an incision from ear to ear along the hair line. The skin is separated from the tissues below in order to have access to tighten the muscles and remove excess fat from underneath. Finally, the skin is stretched across the area, any excess is removed and it is stitched in place along the original opening.

Minimal-Access Cranial Suspension: The MACS technique involves a number of smaller incisions as opposed to one large opening. The muscles are tightened and any fat is removed through these small incisions which are stitched up at the end of the procedure. This style of facelift can also involve a tiny camera which is inserted in one of the incisions and displays an image in the operating room so the surgeon can see which muscles to tighten under the skin.

  • How long do the results from the procedure last?

The results from this type of procedure usually last for around 10 years but it is important to remember that it will not stop the ageing process so gradually wrinkles and lines will return. However, your skin will remain smoother and more youthful looking than before the surgery.

  • What is the recovery period and required aftercare?

Following the surgery, your face may feel tight, swollen, and bruised so it is important to wear supporting garments and sleep upright in bed. After a week you may start to slightly increase your activity and you may be able to return to work after 2 weeks. You must continue to wear the support at night until week 4 and by this time, most of the bruising will have faded. The final result can be judged after around 6 months.

  • Will I look younger after the procedure?

The purpose of this type of procedure is to tighten the muscles and smooth the skin so that lines and wrinkles are reduced.  In doing so, the face appears rejuvenated, creating an overall younger looking complexion. We advise patients to wait until they are at least 40 years old in order to get the best results from this type of surgery.

  • Will I there be any visible scarring?

As with any surgery there can be associated risks.  Typically, the most noted risks common to this procedure are, skin becoming paler or darker in some areas and nerve damage.  However, the chance of these problems will be significantly reduced by choosing one of our fully qualified and experienced surgeons.
