What is Blepharoplasty Surgery?

Also known as eyelid surgery, an eyelid lift and eye bag removal, blepharoplasty surgery is a cosmetic procedure to remove eye bags, tighten and lift the skin around the eye, and correct any issues with vision caused by drooping eyelids. Restoring a more youthful and rested appearance and reducing puffiness and wrinkles, eyelid surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures amongst men and women in the UK.

WHAT DOES BLEPHAROPLASTY INVOLVE?

Typically completed under general anaesthetic, blepharoplasty typically takes between one to three hours.

Eyelid surgery can be performed on either the upper or lower eyelids or both, and your surgeon will advise on the technique your surgery requires during your initial consultation where you’ll discuss your desired results:

  • Firstly, your surgeon will begin by making small incisions on the outside of your lower eyelid, just below your eyelashes, and in the creases of your upper eyelids.
  • It is this opening that will allow any fat under the eye (eye bag) to be repositioned, the excess skin removed and the necessary muscles to be tightened.
  • The incisions are then closed with tiny sutures designed to make scarring almost unnoticeable.

UPPER BLEPHAROPLASTY

If opting to just have upper eyelid surgery, this can usually be a day-case procedure and only requires local anaesthesia.

LOWER BLEPHAROPLASTY

With lower blepharoplasty, or eye bag removal, this will be performed under general anaesthesia and has a slightly longer recovery period.

An alternative treatment to blepharoplasty is dermal fillers. This procedure works by injecting filler to smooth and fill out the eye area, as opposed to removing the eye bag altogether. While this treatment is often successful in less extreme cases, over time the body absorbs the filler which means that it is only temporary. Therefore, if you are looking for a more permanent solution to improve the areas under your eyes, then eyelid surgery/eye bag removal is the answer.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BLEPHAROPLASTY?

Blepharoplasty surgery is an option for those who experience the following:

  • Drooping or sagging upper eyelids
  • Issues with vision as a result of excess skin around the eyelid
  • Loose or excess skin on the lower eyelids
  • Heavy bags and/or puffiness under the eyes

Lifting, tightening the eyelid area and removing eye bags, the benefits of eyelid surgery include:

  • A rejuvenated, brighter, more youthful appearance
  • Improved vision for those who’s excess skin reduced vision
  • Enhanced confidence and self-esteem

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF EYELID SURGERY?

As with any form of cosmetic surgery, there are risks associated with blepharoplasty surgery. These include infection, numbness in the treated area/s and anaesthesia complications.

At Enhance, we used experienced surgeons to minimise surgical risk and ensure the highest quality of care. All risks associated with eyelid surgery and eye bag removal and efforts to minimise negative side effects will be discussed with you during your consultation, so that any concerns are addressed, and your mind put at ease.

RECOVERING FROM EYELID SURGERY

Recovery from eyelid surgery varies by individual and the type of procedure you’ve had. In most cases you’ll be able to leave the clinic on the day of your procedure and full recovery should take 4-6 weeks.

Immediately following blepharoplasty, you may experience watery eyes, numbness, and swelling. Pain and discomfort should be minimal and can be managed with pain killers. Some swelling and bruising in the area are to be expected, but this should begin to subside within one-two weeks following surgery. You’ll likely be advised to take one-two weeks off work, and you should be completely healed, and the final results be visible a few months after surgery.

To aid you in your recovery, your surgeon may recommend the use of eye ointment or drops to help keep the eyes lubricated. It may also be advised that you protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses to prevent sun damage and avoid any strenuous activity post-surgery.

Supporting you through your recovery, we offer 12 months of comprehensive aftercare inclusive of the blepharoplasty cost at Enhance Medical. Consultations and appointments with your operating surgeon or your Patient Care Coordinator are available anytime during your aftercare period to avoid complications, ensure you heal and maintain the results.

  • How long will the results last?

The results of blepharoplasty should be life-long. It is important to remember that this operation will not prevent ageing so fine lines will eventually return to the eye area, but these wrinkles will be much softer than before the treatment.

  • What is the recovery process?

While you may have some initial sensitivity, swelling, numbness around your eyes, this should fade in a couple of weeks. You will be advised to avoid excessive activity, wearing contact lenses, and direct sunlight during the weeks following the procedure but after this you may continue with your usual daily activities.

  • Will I have visible scars?

The position of the incision means that any scarring will be disguised in the lower lashes or a natural fold in the lower eyelid. Over time the scar will fade and become virtually undetectable.
