Face Lift

Face Lift Surgery

Also known as a rhytidectomy, a face lift helps correct signs of ageing by removing excess skin and tissue from your face and neck. Some patients opt for an eye lift at the same time, which can help further improve appearance.

Face lift surgery may be right for you if:

  • The skin on your face and neck has dropped due to the ageing process
  • You have excess skin on your face and neck after weight loss
  • The fold line between your nose and mouth is very deep
  • You want to eliminate jowls on your neckline

Face Lift Surgery Procedure

Several options exist for face lift incisions:

  • A traditional incision, which begins below your ear and travels up to your temple
  • A limited incision, which contours around the bottom of your ear
  • A neck lift incision, which begins at the earlobe and ends behind the ear

Step 1

Incisions usually begin above the hairline at the temples, follow the natural line in front of the ear, curve behind the earlobe into the crease behind the ear and into or along the lower scalp.

Step 2

The arrow shows how the area is moved upwards. Facial, neck tissue and muscle may be separated, fat may be trimmed or suctioned and underlying muscle may be tightened.

Step 3

After deep tissues are tightened, the excess skin is pulled up and back, trimmed and sutured into position.  Most of the scars will be hidden within your hair and in the normal creases of your skin.

After making the incision, your surgeon removes, sculpts or redistributes fat to reshape your face. Your muscles may also be lifted or tightened. Finally, excess skin is removed and your incisions are closed with dissolvable sutures and glue.

The Recovery Process

Your surgeon may place small drains under the skin in your face during the procedure to draw off excess fluid during the initial recovery phase. Post-operative bandages help reduce swelling, and most patients see full results once bruising and swelling has subsided.

Important Questions About Face Lift Surgery

Who is the most suitable face lift patient?

The best facelift patient has jowls, loose neck skin and a general saggy appearance to the skin on the face and neck. If the patient also has lots of wrinkles, non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatment can be combined with a facelift for an improved overall result.

Could I have eye rejuvenation at the same time as a facelift?

Yes, if that’s what you need, the best facelift results are achieved when these two procedures are combined resulting in an overall improvement. Your surgeon will advise on the best course of treatment for your individual requirements.  As well as the face lift, we offer eyelid surgery, eye bag removal or brow lift.

Will there be scarring after facial rejuvenation?

In the case of eye rejuvenation an incision is made close to the natural crease of the eyelid. During a facelift incisions are made in the natural crease lines. In both procedures post operative scarring will fade over time and become virtually undetectable.

Will the wrinkles return?

During your medical consultation your surgeon will point out that the skin will continue to age. It is important that you understand that the ageing process will not stop after a facelift. However, Non-sugical treatments may be used in addition to enhance and/or prolong the benefits of a face lift. These are offered in all 4 clinics around the country.
